Take charge of constituency projects in your domain, Oyo Assembly tells LGs

Published by

Concerned about the number of abandoned projects across the state, the Oyo State House of Assembly has tasked the headship of local government areas and local council development areas to take charge of the maintenance of constituency projects sited in their domains.

The Assembly at its plenary on Thursday made this call against the backdrop of wanton waste that greets projects once the donor leaves office or belongs to a different political affiliation.

In the motion by Speaker, Micheal Adeyemo; Deputy Speaker, Musah Abdulwasi and Majority Leader, Kehinde Subair, the Assembly decried that the constituents were usually at the receiving end of lack of continuity of constituency projects.

The movers called for a proper succession mechanism promoted by both the donor and local government hosting the project(s) to maintain constituency projects.

The Assembly expressed particular concern over constituency projects facilitated by legislators that had been abandoned.

Commenting, Honourable Fatai Adesina of Ibadan South East 1 decried that  some political elites shun old and ongoing projects by their predecessors on the ground of political differences.

He called for a situation in which projects initiators and donors would consider and review existing projects that are due for completion but abandoned before embarking on new ones.

Also commenting, Honourable Bimbo Oladeji of Ogbomosho North constituency said LGs and LCDAs must be involved from conception to execution of the project for them to assume responsibility for the sustenance of projects.

Corroborating, Honourable Segun Ajanaku of Ibadan South West II, said community involvement and subsequent ownership was best approach to ending abandonment of projects.

The speaker, Honourable Adeyemo later ruled that the motion be forwarded to the committee on local government and Chieftaincy Matters to advance workable modalities on mitigating the trend.
