The Standup Women Society (SWS) confers an award of excellence to Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, for his administration’s outstanding performance in curbing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promoting women’s inclusiveness.
Presenting the award to the governor at Dutse Government House, the International President of the Standup Women Society (SWS), Barr. Mrs. Deborah Ijadele-Adetona said the award followed the governor’s performance and commitment to uplifting the social and economic standards of women.
Barr. Mrs Deborah Ijadele-Adetona, who was represented by the Administrative Officer of the association, Timinepere Jombo Idoko, explained that “your policies on women empowerment, action on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and women’s appointments in your government were reviewed and delivered during the International Conference of the association in Owerri, Imo State, which all agreed for your selection to be honoured by SWS.”
According to her, “the Jigawa State government initiatives have witnessed many women breaking above the glass ceiling and becoming economically sufficient.”
“The Governor was also commended for his commitment to gender equity, equality, and inclusiveness of women in his administration. Any sensitive women’s organisation can’t ignore his positive changes in the lives of women and girls. It is also worthy of recognition by any responsible government in the country and beyond.”
Idoko thanked the governor for being gender-sensitive and for ensuring that the policy thrust of his administration gives women the leverage to aspire and be productive. She urged him not to rest on his oars in being a champion for the overall well-being of women and the development of the state.
She stated that the SWS is at the forefront of advocacy for gender parity, the promotion of the rights of women and the girl-child, and the entrenchment of intrinsic family values to help family institutions grow, stabilize, and progress.
In his response, Governor Malam Umar Namadi expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to SWS for recognising his projects and programs, particularly on women and girls’ development, and commended them for the honour.
The governor also said his actions are in line with the national policy for gender introduced by the Federal Government, aimed at addressing the challenges faced by women and children, geared towards development, and reducing poverty for sustainable development.
Malam Namadi noted that policies of free girl-child education, women empowerment, and safe delivery are part of his 12-point agenda.
