SustyVibes and the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) have emphasized the importance of collaboration between the media and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to enhance climate advocacy worldwide.
This sentiment was expressed by climate experts and media stakeholders during a pre-29th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP29) Stakeholders Hangout held in Abuja.
The event gathered over 50 journalists, CSOs, climate advocates, and experts, providing a platform to strategize Nigeria’s priorities and narrative for COP29, which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in December.
Amara Nwankpa, the Director of Partnership and Development at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, stressed the necessity for stakeholders to focus their efforts on energy transition, which he believes is crucial for achieving a more sustainable climate.
According to Nwankpa, Nigeria’s success in global climate discussions will depend on its ability to gradually shift toward renewable energy.
He urged stakeholders to view the upcoming COP29 as a chance to present a cohesive national plan.
Hannah Omokhaye, Project Manager at SustyVibes, highlighted the critical role of partnerships in promoting advocacy for climate action.
She stated that for climate initiatives to have a significant impact, the media and CSOs must collaborate closely to amplify voices and ensure accountability. Successful advocacy campaigns for climate action require this teamwork.
Nicholas Adeniyi, Project Manager at CJID, also urged journalists to focus significantly on Nigeria’s climate commitments.
He emphasized that innovative storytelling is essential to engage the public effectively. “The more people understand the urgency of climate change, the greater pressure there will be on our leaders to fulfill their promises,” he stressed.
Maryam Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Gatefield, reinforced the need to maintain momentum, stating, “The networks established must continue beyond this gathering. Together, we can drive the climate action that Nigeria desperately needs,” encouraging ongoing collaboration among all attendees leading up to COP29.
Participants left the event energized and committed to leveraging their platforms and expertise to ensure Nigeria’s climate agenda is effectively represented and impactful on the global stage.
