Suspected transformer vandal electrocuted in Benue

Luck ran out of a young man identified simply as Inalegwu Major whose lifeless body dangled on a transformer in Otukpo area of Benue.

The incident was reported to have happened early hours of Saturday as people in the ancient city besieged the scene to catch a glimpse of the deceased.

The victim, according to eyewitnesses had climbed a pole and tried to vandalise the transformer located close to Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB in Otukpo when he was electrocuted.

An eyewitness who identified himself as Sunny said that the victim might have been electrocuted while trying to vandalise the transformer.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to newsmen on  Saturday said that the dangling body of the victim was sighted around 5:00 am by a passer-by who raised an alarm.

Sunny said, “It was around 5 am this morning (Saturday) that a passerby raised the alarm of the lifeless body on a transformer leading to several people besieging the place to catch a glimpse of the suspect.

The Head, Corporate Communication of JED company, Dr Adakole Elijah who confirmed the incident expressed shock that the victim could climb the transformer pole despite the tight security around the installation.

He said, “The truth is that the transformer is properly safeguarded, the transformer was mounted on a pole, so, it beats my imagination that someone would climb that pole.

“That tells you it was deliberate, a clear case of vandalism. I’m sure he went with a very terrible motive and unfortunately, he has paid with his life.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the state command, Catherine Anene could not be reached for reaction as calls made to her cellphone rang out.
