How suspected robbery kingpin operated from prison

Published by

The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) is still trying to unravel how an alleged robbery gang leader organised operations while in prison allegedly with the connivance of some prisons warders.

The revelation came after the arrest of one Abdulrahman (surname withheld), in Kano last week after operatives trailed him for several months before he was eventually apprehended where he was hiding in his estate.

Informed police sources disclosed to Metro that Abdulrahman, who is now in (FSARS) custody, is assisting the police to unravel his connection with prison warders to perpetrate crime.

The source revealed that some prison warders who were collaborating with the robbery kingpin from the prison were also in police custody.

The source said that Abdulrahman was arrested in Kano last week after operatives trailed him for several months before he was eventually apprehended.

Metro gathered that the suspect, Abdulrahman, was once jailed for five years for robbery and transferred to one of the federal prisons in the South-South region.

According to the source, while in the prison, Abdulrahman organised crime in connivance with some of the prison warders and were allegedly giving them returns after every robbery operation.

It was also said that for every robbery operation that took part in any part of the country, the suspect must be in the know since he directed his gang members on how to move their armoury and keep the arms after each operation.

The source said that for every robbery operation, a percentage of the proceed was allocated to the suspect. He was alleged to also be coordinating Fulani kidnappers from the prison.

The source further revealed that after serving his five-year jail term, he was released in 2015, and he went back into full robbery operations until his arrest.

Some robbery suspects who were last week arrested, confessed that Abdulrahman was their kingpin, and he was subsequently arrested.

Police sources revealed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to organising robbery operations from the prison, while some prison warders who were on his payroll were assisting in passing information to the suspect’s gang members.

The source said that one of the prison warders allegedly possessed six posh cars and a mansion in the South-South region.

The confession of the kingpin has led to the arrest of 10 of his members who were among those carrying out the robbery operations when their master was in prison.

The police source added that they had spread their dragnet in a bid to arrest the other suspects who are currently in hiding.
