Suspected APC protesters attack governor Mimiko’s convoy in Ondo

PROTESTERS suspected to be member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State on Thursday attacked the convoy of the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, at the entrance of State House of Assembly

The protesters who resumed at the entrance of the state House of Assembly complex around 7am to prevent the governor from entering the floor of the House to present the last budget of his administration destroyed some vehicles in the governor’s convoy.

It was gathered that the governor who was driving himself in a KIA vehicle in company of the co-founder chairman of the African Newspaper of Nigeria (ANN), Dr Tokunbo Dosunmu, to inspect the ongoing work at the International Event centre, The DOME”

The governor who needed to make a u-turn close to the House of Assembly, which is not far from the event centre ran into the protesters who were led by an ex-officio of the APC, Saka Ogunleye, sited the governor, ran after his vehicle.

The governor was accompanied to inspect the project by Awolowo-Dosunmu and members of the state executive council who were in a coaster bus‎ that followed governor’s vehicle and closely followed by an ambulance.

The protesters however threw stones the coaster bus and the ambulance destroying the mirror of the side screens of the two vehicles but no one was hurt in the attack.

An official of the state government explained that the governor was at the Dome to inspect the ongoing project at the Dome, which is slated for commissioning before the expiration of his tenure in February 24.

He said “All other vehicles in the convoy have gone, but the ambulance, which was the last, was attacked and had part of its side mirror affected.

‎”The governor who watched the drama asked his security not to harm the protesters‎ who later blocked the entrance to the DOME.”

The hoodlums hijacked a trailer on the Oda road and used the vehicle to block the busy road and preventing free flow of traffic and all effort to appeal to them by the security operatives to vacate the road turned on deaf ears.

They vowed not to vacate the road, stoning some policemen in the process while the police fought back which led to pandemonium in the area while the policemen reportedly shot sporadically to disperse the surging crowd who were attacking them.

Many of the thugs were injured while vehicles were ‎destroyed by hoodlums and shop owners within the vicinity hurriedly closed their shop for fear of looting and molestation by the thugs.

The security operatives had to reinforce some of its men from the mobile and Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) department who dispersed the protesters.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph,‎ confirmed that two vehicles in the convoy of the governor were attacked by the thugs and added that the thugs equally attacked policemen deployed to the scene to maintain peace. ‎
