Supreme Court ruling: Kano gov unfolds plans to conduct LG elections

Published by

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed his administration’s readiness to conduct local government elections in the state very soon.

According to him, the move complies with the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the financial autonomy of the third tier of government.

He made this known in a statement signed by his spokesman, Sanusi Bature, a copy of which was made available to the press in Kano.

Governor Yusuf disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting with the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the Government House, Kano, on Friday.

“Preparations are in top gear by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) for the conduct of council polls, and I can assure you this will happen very soon,” he said.

The statement said the governor stressed his unwavering respect for the rule of law and his commitment to financial prudence, accountability, and transparency in governance at all levels.

“Governor Yusuf assured free, fair, and credible local government elections, urging opposition parties to try their luck as his government will not interfere with the electoral process,” the statement said.

It reads further: “Our administration has allowed the previous LG Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to finish their tenure despite pressure from within; this is out of respect we have for the rule of law.

“So, our respect for accountability and consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment triggered our readiness to conduct council elections.

“We will soon invite you again for the selection of our party’s candidates to be fielded in the 44 LGAs, who will run for the offices of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors. We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for the NNPP,” Gov. Yusuf assured.
