NIGERIA’S former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has urged Nigerians to support the Nigeria Police Force in effective policing towards ensuring crime-free society.
He described the Police job as a difficult one and charged the citizenry to provide useful information to the Police in making their assignments easier.
Obasanjo said this on Monday at a launch of “Change Begins With Me” campaign, maiden meeting of the Eminent People’s Forum and Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) organised by the Ogun State Police Command, held at Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
“The work of policing our community, local government, state and country is not the job of the Police alone. It is for all of us. We must all engage in helping the Police in securing the country. They have a very difficult task to do. We must individually and collectively help the Police, “he added.
Obasanjo further said that for the Nigeria Police to turn a new leaf and make the “Change Begins With Me” campaign successful, the general public must ensure that necessary support is given for effective policing.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, submitted that the orthodox concepts, which regards security as the exclusive preserve of the police and security agencies had become obsolete and moribund.
He said, “Security is now the concern of all citizens in the country as crime has no creed and map. Everyone is stakeholder in this renewed security project. We all know that there cannot be any meaningful development without security.”
