SUNU Health Nigeria enlightens public on health insurance

Published by

SUNU Health Nigeria has emphasised the company’s commitment to empowering Nigerians with essential health insurance knowledge.

SUNU, the distinguished Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) with history spanning over 26 years, also debunked common myths surrounding the health maintenance organisation’s landscape.

Mr. Reginald Nweke, Head of Business Retention at SUNU Health during a recent media interview said the firm aims to reach individuals and families, unraveling common misconceptions surrounding healthcare access and affordability in Nigeria.

“We are thrilled to engage with Super FM 92.7 and debunk common myths surrounding the health maintenance organisation’s landscape. Importantly, we believe in equipping individuals with accurate information to facilitate informed healthcare decisions. Our enduring dedication to affordability, accessibility, and quality healthcare underscores our mission to foster a healthier Nigeria for all,” Nweke said.

He shed light on the importance of making informed healthcare decisions, and debunked myths hindering individuals from accessing vital healthcare services.

Nweke highlighted five widespread misconceptions affecting individuals across various demographics.

He pointed out that contrary to popular belief, HMOs prioritise patient well-being by favouring generic medications, which are equally effective and often more cost-efficient over brand names.

Healthcare professionals adhere to a strict oath to do no harm and avoid dispensing substandard drugs. SUNU Health advises enrollees to avoid hospitals that dispense substandard medications.

On the myth that HMOs deny care to save money, he explained that the primary objective of HMOs is to manage enrollees’ care effectively, not deny it. Ensuring members receive appropriate treatment is crucial to prevent complications and maintain customer satisfaction, contrary to the misconception of care denial.

He debunked the myth that HMOs are only for the wealthy, and said, “This misconception is debunked as HMOs offer a range of health insurance plans to suit various budgets, making affordable coverage accessible to everyone, irrespective of social status.”

On the notion that only employers can provide health insurance, MrNwekesaidindividuals need not rely solely on employer-sponsored plans, as HMOs offer individual and family plans ensuring healthcare coverage is accessible to all.

Also, he dismissed the myth that the young and healthy don’t need health insurance, explaining that regardless of age or health status, unforeseen accidents and illnesses can occur. HMO coverage acts as a safety net, providing necessary care without imposing financial burdens.

“By dispelling these misconceptions, HMOs present a vital solution for managing healthcare needs, empowering prospective enrollees to make informed decisions regarding their well-being and averting catastrophic healthcare expenditures,” he noted.

According to him, as a premier Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) in Nigeria, SUNU Health remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare delivery.

The company prioritizes providing prompt and qualitative medical services at the most cost-effective prices, with humanity at the core of its initiatives, and it is dedicated to delivering accessible healthcare solutions across Nigeria.

Leveraging its extensive expertise, robust customer service, and established partnerships within the healthcare sector, SUNU Health Nigeria is a proud member of the SUNU Group operating in 17 African countries.
