Sultan charges leaders to take action in solving Nigeria’s challenges

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar on Monday called on leaders in the country to take drastic steps toward solving the present challenges confronting the nation.

The Sultan made the call during the opening of the annual Central Council and Pre-Ramadan meeting of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, in Kaduna.

He said that the nation does not lack knowledge on the way out of its challenges but the implementation for the overall interest of the country.

He decried the high poverty rate and social problems in the country, saying that whenever problems are allowed to linger without taking appropriate steps to solving them, they become worst.

“Non-implementation of recommendations made at the last central council must be addressed; we must take action to tackle the problem we are facing as Muslims.

“We have to get up and get immediate solutions to the problems, we need to take action on our deliberations and submit our recommendations to those in authority for implementation.

“We are duty bound to help all Muslims in the country; let us be good to one another and worship Allah to the best of our abilities,’’ he noted.

The Sultan also urged Nigerians to pray for their leaders for guidance and good health so that they could discharge their duties effectively.

On the forthcoming Ramadan, the Sultan tasked Muslim clerics to preach according to the dictates of Islam as enjoined in the Holy book.

Meanwhile, some presenters at the event made some recommendations on how to tackle the nation’s challenges.

Dr Mustapha Abubakar of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, who presented a paper on Zakat and Waqaf as an instrument of combating poverty, noted that the adoption of Islamic Financial technology would address the growing socio-economic challenges bedevilling Nigeria.

Another presenter, Prof. Ibrahim Umara of the University of Maiduguri who spoke on the social menace of Almajiri system of education, urged the government to enact a law to regulate qualification of marriage as stated in the Sharia.

He said the law should compel parents to take up their responsibilities including raising up their children properly in line with the teaching of Islam.

“Once individuals become couples, make them honour their obligations as stipulated in the Holy Quran and Hadith,” he noted.
