ANGRY students of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) at Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area main campus, on Monday went on the rampage, shutting down the institution in protest over what they described as a sudden hike in school fees.
A statement by the management of the institution led by the vice chancellor, Professor Nse Essien, announced an increase in school fees as applied to non and indigenous students.
According to the new fees regime, students from Akwa Ibom State will now pay N90, 000 as against the former N48,000, while non indigenous students are expected to pay N110, 000.
Students were recalled last month after a protracted strike called by all industrial unions over unpaid salary arrears running into several months.
Apparently worried by the sudden hike in fees, students barricaded the main entrances into the institution, turning back students and lecturers.
Several vehicles and fuel laden trucks barred from plying the road by the students were seen stranded on both sides of the road as the protesting students continue to chant “we no go gree, we no go gree” resistant song.
“This is ridiculous”, “Govt is insensitive despite economic crisis”, “we won’t vacate here until govt rescinds the bad decision”, read some of the placards.
When contacted, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, said she was in a meeting and could not reply at the time of filing this report.
Likewise, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Odiko Macdon, did not respond to calls made to his phone.
