Student dies as school building collapses in Ondo

A Junior Secondary Student, Esther Akinrinola,  of St. Andrew Grammar school, Ondo town, in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo state, reportedly died when a part of the school building collapsed on Friday.

The 14-year-old deceased who was the only victim was said to have died when the building collapsed directly on her head, resulting in her death.

It was gathered that the school authorities had envisaged that the building might collapse and moved the students out of the building but most students always stay around the building.

The incident threw the school into confusion as teachers and the pupils of the school quickly ran out of their classrooms and offices to rescue the deceased who gave up immediately.

A source within the school said, ” They were playing inside the abandoned building when some blocks fell from the walls of the building and landed on the deceased head. Immediately the incident happened, the pupil was rushed to the Ondo State Teaching Hospital for medical attention but she died on the way to the hospital.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident said the Principal of the school, Mr. Sunday Oladunjoye, had been invited to the police station for interrogation, adding that investigation had begun on the matter.

He said, “The principal had been invited and explained to us that the building has been abandoned for a very long time but we are not comfortable with that excuse so the principal may be prosecuted for negligence.

” When the building has been abandoned why did they allow the pupils to be playing around it,  they should have pulled it down. We have commenced an investigation into the incident. “
