Strike: NYU tackles FG over failure to meet ASUU demands

Published by

The Nigeria Youth Union (NYU) has lambasted the Federal Government over its failure to prevent the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by addressing the genuine demands of the Union.

National President of NYU, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, also warned state governors against actions that could endanger the country’s democracy.

Obasi in a statement made available to newsmen, on Thursday, in Abuja, frowned at what he described as “the Federal Government for its hide and seek game with ASUU in the last 13 years,” saying that instead of talking about new agreements the Federal Government should work out an implementation strategy for the 2009 agreement.

Obasi, who is a former national president of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) lamented that the governors are not bothered by the face-off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.

The NYU president, therefore, urged stakeholders and political leaders to wade into the matter, warning that the 2023 elections might not hold if university students are left to roam the streets.

He regretted that actions and utterances of some state governors across the two major political parties in recent times do not inspire hope.

The national president of the umbrella youth organisation said state governors from All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be held responsible if anything bad happens to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement made available to journalists yesterday, Obasi said Nigerian youths are very worried by the conduct and dispositions of some state governors.

He noted that unless governors resolve to play by the rules and insist on toeing the path of rule of law and constitutionality, the 2023 poll might not hold.
