Stop shabby treatment of senior citizens, preacher tells govts

GOVERNMENTS at all levels have been called upon to formulate policies and programmes that will insulate senior citizens from hardship and ease their affairs.

Popular preacher and northern states missionary of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Muyideen Bello, made the call in Afin-Akoko, Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State, at the celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of Alhaji (Prince) Aderibigbe Kilani Balogun.

At the event, which was also used for the installation of the centenarian as the Seriki Musulumi of Afin and the presentation of his biography, Sheikh Bello, in a lecture titled “Old Age and Islam”, stressed the need for the society to be kind to those who are advanced in years and treat them with dignity.

He condemned what he called the shabby treatment of pensioners, most of whom are very old, by governments through irregular payment of their monthly stipends.

However, the cleric described long life as an opportunity for mortals to do sufficient good deeds to find the grace of Allah in this world and earn His mercy and forgiveness on the Day of Judgment.

He counseled elders to always do things that would bring them respect and dignity and strive to hand down good virtues to posterity.

The chairman on the occasion, Alahji Yusuf Adebayo, a commissioner at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Abuja, commended the children of the celebrant for the different programmes put in place to honour their father during his lifetime.

Alahji Adebayo, who was represented by Alhaji Isiaq Sanni, urged people to always take care of their aged parents in order to receive mercy from Almighty Allah.

The royal father of the day, the Olubaka of Oka land, Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, described Alhaji Kilani Balogun as a religious man who trained his children to be God-fearing, saying the cleric’s life was worthy of emulation.

A highlight of the occasion was the presentation of Alhaji Balogun’s biography titled “The Passport of Mallam Kilani – Afin”, authored by one of his grandchildren, Dr Hassan Kilani.
