Stop reckless driving during campaign, FRSC tells politicians

THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) warned motorists and other road users on political campaign movements to desist from unsafe acts and reckless driving that can put their lives at risk.

The Zonal Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Dr Kayode Olagunju, gave the warning in a statement signed by Mr Aliyu Ma’aji, the Zonal Head of Education.

Ma’aji quoted Olagunju as making the caution in Sokoto on Monday while speaking with a group of transport unions. He warned politicians to be wary of dangerous driving and overloading during campaigns.

“I observed political motorcades in the states are attending rallies driving dangerously in overloaded vehicles with many hanging on top of the vehicles.

“Some passengers seated in the booths, trunks of the vehicles and often drive above the speed limits.

“These acts are contrary to Section 10 of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, result in avoidable injuries and loss of lives and property,” Olagunju said.

He urged all road users to be safety conscious always and abide by all safety regulations as only those that are alive can exercise their civic responsibility of voting during the elections.

He cited Sections 10 (4) (h) and 10 (4) (s) of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007 make it mandatory for Vehicle Identification Mark (Number Plates) to be conspicuously displayed on the vehicles.

He further charged FRSC officials to ensure swift response to rescue calls from road users in the interest of effective service delivery.
