State of Emergency: Group commends speaker Abbas, House of Reps on due process

The Parliamentary Watch Initiative (PWI) has expressed confidence in Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and the 10th House of Representatives, commending their handling of the approval process for the state of emergency in Rivers State.

In a statement on Monday, Dr. Matthew Gabriel, executive director of PWI, said the group conducted an independent review of the House’s proceedings and found no evidence of undue influence in the decision-making process.

“After carefully assessing the circumstances surrounding the House’s resolution, we believe the decision was made in line with legislative best practices,” Gabriel said. “Speaker Abbas has demonstrated leadership in guiding the House through the process.”

He added that the House met the required quorum before voting to support President Bola Tinubu’s request for emergency rule in Rivers, addressing concerns about the resolution’s timing and procedure.

“Our findings indicate that lawmakers engaged in deliberations before reaching a decision,” he said. “Suggestions that the process was rushed or influenced do not align with the available facts.”

Gabriel also responded to claims that lawmakers were bribed to approve the measure, stating that there was no verifiable evidence to support such allegations.

“We have not come across any proof of financial inducement. The lawmakers acted with the aim of ensuring national stability and security,” he said. “The House of Representatives demonstrated professionalism and commitment to upholding the rule of law.”

He noted that PWI, as a parliamentary watchdog, monitors legislative activities to promote accountability and transparency.

“Our organisation remains committed to ensuring that due process is followed in legislative matters,” he said. “We closely observe parliamentary actions to uphold democratic principles.”

Gabriel encouraged Nigerians to engage constructively with their elected representatives and rely on verified information.

“The 10th House of Representatives, under Speaker Abbas, has carried out its duties independently,” he said. “It is important for Nigerians to focus on facts rather than speculation.”

He reaffirmed PWI’s position that the House’s decision aligns with constitutional governance and national security considerations.

“We acknowledge the leadership of the House in handling this matter,” he said. “National stability and security should remain the priority.”
