‘Stalwarts of PDP, LP set to join APC in Plateau’

There are strong indications that some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) in Plateau State are set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that last week, Gyang Zi (SAN), the LP’s senatorial candidate for Plateau North Senatorial District in the 2023 election, abandoned the party in favour of APC, citing the party’s crises at both state and national levels.

Checks revealed that a staunch member of the Peoples Democratic Party, also a former member of the National Assembly (name withheld), and his supporters have concluded arrangements to join APC, while some of those who defected to PDP shortly before the 2023 election have equally indicated their interest in returning to APC.

Speaking with Tribune Online, the APC State Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, said there are many people in the queue waiting to join the political party in Plateau State, and that while some have completed their consultations, others are still consulting.

“The senatorial candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, along with his supporters, joined the APC last week. They were received, and quite a number of people from other political parties in the state have written to us. Some have concluded their consultations, while others are still consulting.

“I can certainly tell you that between now and July this year, there is going to be a gale of defections into our party, and we are ready to receive them. While some are joining for the first time, others see it as a return home.”

He narrated that Nigerians have seen the work and all the good things associated with the APC, adding that the initial misconceptions about the party had fizzled out and people are now more at home with the All Progressives Congress based on its renewed hope agenda.

“In politics, the more the better. We have witnessed the President’s good intentions and the administration’s actions, particularly the way the renewed hope agenda is being carried out, which is why there are so many people cross-carpeting into the APC. Since welfare and improving infrastructure are the ultimate goals, we would think more positively about Nigeria if we banded together.”

Hon. Bature debunked the notion that the ruling political party is planning to make Nigeria a one-party state, adding that joining a political party is a matter of choice and that no one can coerce anybody into joining a particular party against their will.
