Stakeholders harp on adherence to elevator safety standards

Stakeholders in the building industry have resolved that elevator safety standards must be strictly followed to prevent negative occurrences in the industry.

This resolution was part of the communiqué issued at the end of the Equipment Safety Workshop for the Year 2024, themed: “Safety Compliance in the Elevator and Vertical Equipment Industry.” The event took place at the Movenpick Hotel, Ikoyi, and was attended by various stakeholders in the industry.

During his opening remarks, Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the Lagos Safety Commission, stated that the workshop aimed to enhance safety standards and foster compliance within the elevator and vertical transportation sector. Mojola emphasized that, with rapid urbanization and technological advancement, the registration of lifts, regulation, and enforcement of safety standards in line with best practices in the sector cannot be compromised.

Mojola recalled incidents of elevator breakdowns and safety breaches, underscoring the urgent need for a paradigm shift. He stated, “This workshop serves as a pivotal platform for industry professionals, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to come together, exchange knowledge, and collaborate towards a safer environment for all.”

In his keynote address, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, highlighted the importance of the workshop, noting that a strong occupational safety and health culture is not just a goal but a fundamental necessity in any workplace. He asserted that accidents, injuries, and fatalities can be prevented through a collective commitment to safety management.

“A strong occupational safety and health culture is not just a goal but a fundamental necessity in any workplace. It is our collective commitment to safety management that can prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities while safeguarding the future success and growth of our business,” Oyerinde said.

Highlights of the event included presentations by various experts offering guidance on how to collectively address these issues and elevate safety standards to new heights.
