SSASCGOC appoints Olorunfemi as Gen. Sec.

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has appointed Comrade Ayo Olorunfemi, as its General Secretary.

To this effect, the union has written the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige of the appointment; and asked that Comrade Olorunfemi be “accorded the needed support for developmental trade unionism in Nigeria.”

The letter, signed by the President General of SSASCGOC, Comrade Mohammed Yunusa and titled: “Appointment of General Secretary,” read: “under the directive of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) I most respectively write to extend our compliments and to inform you that the Central Working Committee of the union has approved the appointment of Comrade Olorunfemi Ayodele Festus as its General Secretary.

“His appointment was ratified by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union at its meeting held in Abeokuta on Tuesday, February 13, 2017.”

Comrade Olorunfemi holds a Master Degree in Public Administration from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, a professional member of Nigeria Institute of Public Relations; National Institute of Marketing and Fellow of Chartered Institute of Civilian Administration of Ghana amongst other.

Before his appointment, he was an Assistant General Manager with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Olorunfemi has between 1994 and 2010 worked as Head and Assistant Chief State secretary, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) Abuja, where he was in charge of the day to day administration of the Union Staff and members from 2003-2010.

During the period, he formulated strategies for emancipation of all Federal Senior Civil Servants in Nigeria, vigorously pursued and protected the rights of Federal Civil Servants including their rights to own decent accommodation during Monetization policy of Federal Government in 2005.

More importantly, he was prominent among those who facilitated the recognition and registration of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as a Labour Center using Corporate Governance in various planned programmes of Mass Mobilization, Liaison and Industrial Relations.

He was involved in negotiation with Federal Government on HR issues as it related to Public Service and Administration of Collective Bargaining Structure. He took over the FCT office of ASCSN, with about 12 agencies and revenue base of about N4million per month in 2003 and moved it to over 70 agencies and over N50million monthly revenue base by 2007.

He successfully organised and led several protests to press home member’s demands. The last was the 2010 protest that led to Salary Relativity in the Civil Servants, which also opened the way for the new minimum wage.
