SSANU re-elects Ibrahim as National President

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has re-elected Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim as its National President for a second term of four years.

In a keenly contested election, Comrade Ibrahim secured a resounding victory with 842 votes, defeating his opponent, Shishi Luper, who garnered 88 votes. Similarly, Deputy President Dr. Leku Ador retained his position, defeating Dr. Aniete Ati with 611 votes to 320.

In another tightly contested race, Comrade Uchenna Nwokeji, the SSANU Chairman of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), emerged victorious with 617 votes, outpacing Comrade John Igboke, who received 311 votes. Meanwhile, Comrade Timnan Rimdap clinched the position of National Internal Auditor, triumphing over two other candidates.

Expressing his gratitude, Comrade Ibrahim thanked members for their overwhelming support, describing it as a mandate to continue advancing the union’s goals.

“I stand before you today, filled with gratitude and deep humility, as I accept the mandate you have given me to continue leading our great union, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). This trust and responsibility you have placed in me is not taken lightly, and I am honored by your confidence in my leadership,” Ibrahim said during his acceptance speech.

He highlighted the achievements of his first tenure, emphasizing the union’s resilience and progress despite a challenging political landscape.

“Over the past four years, together, we have elevated SSANU to unprecedented heights. In a landscape often marked by unsympathetic policies toward workers’ rights, we have not only sustained but advanced the welfare of our members. Through courage, wisdom, and consistent engagement, we have brought the concerns of our members to the forefront of national labor discourse,” he stated.

Ibrahim also pointed to the union’s strides toward financial independence, citing the forthcoming commissioning of a hotel edifice as a major milestone. He praised the project as a symbol of efficient, transparent, and accountable governance, achieved without imposing additional levies on members.

The re-elected president pledged to maintain transparency in governance, foster inclusivity, and uphold democratic principles within SSANU.

“Today, I renew my dedication to SSANU’s future. I pledge to be the leader that listens, the leader that acts, and the leader that unites,” he concluded.

With his re-election, Ibrahim promised to build on the foundation of his first term, prioritizing the welfare of members, strengthening the union’s visibility, and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
