SSANIP, Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, protests non-implementation of new minimum wage

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), the Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, on Tuesday, staged a protest against the non-implementation of the new minimum wage by the Oyo State government.
They called on Governor Seyi Makinde to ensure that the new minimum wage is used to pay SSANIP members’ salary in the institution in the interest of justice and equity.
Speaking with the Tribune Online on the sidelines of the protest which was held in front of the administrative building of the institution, the chairman of SSANIP in the Polytechnic Ibadan, Comrade Abiodun Abegunde said: “Our protest today is centred on the payment of the new minimum wage to our members, which we have clamouring for since January 2020.”
According to him, “the new minimum wage has been approved for other civil servants in the state since January, but members of staff of the Polytechnic Ibadan have not been paid with the new minimum wage scale. We are worried about this development because we are also part of the civil servants in Oyo State.”
Abegunde continued “our members are unhappy that since the new minimum wage has been approved for other civil servants in the state since January, why are we not benefitting from it. This pure injustice and an unfair treatment, which we can no longer bear.
“We have at different fora discussed with the management of the Polytechnic Ibadan and the Governing Council to do the needful by interceding for us on the part of the state government. Our take-home pay now can never take us anywhere. Prices of food items, goods and commodities have increased in the market.
“The same markets people who have been enjoying the new minimum wage go to is also the same markets we, SSANIP members patronise. There should be no disparity between us because we are also civil servants,” Abegunde stated.
While commending Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde for the prompt payment of salary to civil servants in the state, he pleaded that members of staff of the Polytechnic Ibadan should not be exempted from benefitting in the payment of the new minimum wage.
