MOST of our politicians have failed to honour their promises. However, I find three of them worthy of our trust and support, namely Governor Ayodele Fayose, President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Whether some agree or not, they are people who have offered what they personally promised. At the inception of Buhari’s administration, despite his party’s strategy of grand promises, he was very modest and realistic in his handling of promises. He has been fighting corruption which he said could kill Nigeria if Nigeria did not kill it.
For his part, Fayose who promised to concentrate on the development of artisans, who are drivers of the economy. This, he has done through refundable grants with incredible moratorium to artisans. He has also not stopped the tempo of his promised ‘stomach infrastructure’ while he also lives-up to his obligations to the elite class.
Again, his Buy Made in Nigeria campaign is genuine on all fronts because recently, his own biological son graduated from a Nigerian private university. He is living the talk. These two political figures will go down well in history, at least in the areas I have highlighted.
Also, Atiku Abubakar has been consistent as an advocate of restructuring, employing his vast political network to canvass regional independence.
Being from the North where restructuring is viewed differently, he has continued to demonstrate his independence of mind, winning more of his compatriots to the side of restructuring. He was able to win the support of former president Ibrahim Babangida who referred to him as the lone voice for restructuring.
We hope politicians can live up to their campaign promises while we the citizenry give them our continued support. Posterity is the ultimate judge.
