Soldiers intercept 132 bags of Indian hemp in Ondo

Troops of 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have foiled an attempt to smuggle 132 bags of illicit drugs suspected to be marijuana into Asaba, the Delta State capital, through the River Niger.

Troops of the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army have intercepted 132 bags of illicit drugs suspected to be Indian hemp at a checkpoint along Benin-Ore highway and Owo, Owo Local Government Area.

The bags of the Indian hemp which was estimated to worth about N5.8m were intercepted separately at Omotosho and Benin-Owo checkpoints.

At the Omotosho military checkpoint, 82 bags of Indian hemp being conveyed by druglords were abandoned in two vehicles with registration number Lagos APP-918-FA and a Green Toyota with FST 169-BW.

The suspected drug baron abandoned their vehicles with the bags of hemp and ran away into a nearby bush after sighting the security operatives.

In Owo, two suspects, Nze Ezenwa 55 years and Mr Stephen Sunday, 35 years who dressed in police camouflage were caught with 50 bags of Indian hemp at Isua Military checkpoint.

The suspects who were apprehended with a white Toyota Sienna with registration number RBC 334 BG said they are on their way to Abuja to deliver the goods to one Alhaji Seriki

While one of the 9 suspects, Ezenwa said he was a former police constable and was to receive N125,000 after delivering the Indian hemp in Abuja, Stephen said he is a commercial driver seeking to make a quick fortune.

Ezenwa said he used police paraphernalia to evade arrest.

The Officer Commanding, Military Police, Emontimi Konte Cleopas, who spoke to newsmen after handing over the suspects and exhibits to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said the suspects wore masked and were dressed in Nigeria Police pullover.

He said: “They replaced the original vehicle plate number with fake Nigeria Police vehicle number NPF 1651D and mounted with a siren in order to divert the attention of security agencies.

“Some of the items recovered from them were four mobile phones, two wallets and N148,300.00.”

The Deputy Commander, Narcotics of the NDLEA, Ibrahim Adamu, said more investigations would be conducted before the suspects would be prosecuted.
