Sokoto: USAID seeks traditional rulers, women’s roles in conflict resolution

The roles of women and traditional and religious leaders have been emphasised in conflict mitigation and resolution.

Rising from its second quarterly conflict mitigation and prevention dialogue in Sokoto State, USAID State2State identifies issues that can lead to conflicts and professes resolutions on how to mitigate and prevent conflicts.

Dr Ladan Abdulkadir, USAID State2State, State Team Lead, remarked that Nigeria is bedevilled with conflicts in different degrees across the country, hence the need to develop ideas that will nip conflicts in the bud.

He enjoined participants at the meeting to be committed to carrying out the outcome and resolutions of the meeting.

USAID State2State Conflict Specialists, Diner Cosmos, moderated the technical session on the recommendation on steps to mitigate the drivers of conflict arising from the provisions and implementation of the state and local government areas budget participation and roles of women in conflict prevention and mitigation.

The technical session also deliberated on the Conflict Assessment Framework/Political Economy Analysis, CAF/PEA Contextual Update, which recommends an approach to mitigating/preventing the recurrence of violent conflicts and, as well, develops an action plan to address identified or emerging key drivers of conflict to minimise any escalation for implementation.

Some of the emerging conflicts recorded within the first quarter in Sokoto state include the kidnapping of five rice merchants and the demand for a nine million naira ransom for their release; an attack on a commercial vehicle in Tureta local government area, where all passengers, including a lecturer at Shehu Shagari College of Education, were kidnapped.

Other conflicts recorded in Sokoto state within the first quarter are the kidnapping of two persons and the murder of the PDP Treasurer in the Yabo local government area; the killings of four vigilantes in Goronyo local government; and the recent kidnapping of seventeen Almajiri students and a woman in Gada local government.
