The Commissioner for Social Welfare and Culture, Alhaji Surajo Gatawa, disclosed this at a news conference in Sokoto on Wednesday.
Gatawa said that the state government was committed to ensuring that less privileged persons in Sokoto were supported, to enhance their living standard and ease their sufferings, among other concerns.
He added that “the gesture will go a long way in enabling the indigent beneficiaries to feed well and to perform their religious obligations with ease.”
The commissioner said that the state government spent N3 million in the treatment of mentally retarded persons at the Psychiatric Hospital, Kware.
He noted that “early this year, the ministry took over the payment of the monthly allowances of disabled persons across the 23 local governments of the state.
“Over N45.8 million is being released monthly by the state government to cater for 6,979 physically challenged persons in the 23 local governments of the state, with each person receiving N6,500.”
He commended the efforts of the state government in all sectors in the state.
