Stakeholders in Sokoto State have urged the government to take proactive steps in providing inclusive education to accommodate all categories of students.
This call was made during a one-day workshop held on Tuesday in recognition of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Sokoto.
The workshop was organized by the USAID Nigeria State Accountability, Transparency, and Effectiveness (State2State) Activity and took place at Soul Care Hotels in Sokoto.
In her remarks, the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs highlighted that this initiative serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action to end all forms of violence against women and girls globally.
“It challenges us to reflect on the strides we have made since the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and to renew our collective resolve to end gender-based violence.
“In Sokoto State, as in many parts of Nigeria, gender-based violence remains a pressing issue, manifesting in physical, sexual, psychological, and economic forms.

Women and girls, especially those with disabilities, bear the brunt of these violations, which undermine their rights, dignity, and opportunities for meaningful participation in society.
“As representatives of government and advocates for justice and equity, we recognize the grave implications of GBV-not just on individuals but on families, communities, and our state as a
whole.
“Gender-based violence stifles progress, perpetuates inequality, and undermines the sustainable development goals to which we are committed”
She said the Ministry for Women and Children Affairs, has been at the forefront of efforts to protect, empower, and uplift women and children in Sokoto State.
Also speaking, Mrs Ejiro Okotie, Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist for State2State said Disability inclusion is the responsibility of everyone and should not be left to the government or civil society organisations alone.
She said people living with disability are more prone to Gender Based Violence which needs to be addressed holistically.
