Sokoto govt pledges support for OGP SAP

The implementation of Open Government Partnership (OGP), a global partnership with over one hundred countries where Sokoto state, enlisted as one of the two hundred sub-nationals in February 2022, is not encouraging.

With all hope not lost, USAID State2State Public Financial Management specialist, Usman Faleye, called on the state steering and technical committees, “to brace up to their responsibilities and network with more non-state actors and as well, learn from their counterparts in states doing well in the OGP.”

Faleye made the call at a two-day quarter-one progress review of OGP State Action Plan implementation meeting in Sokoto with relevant stakeholders in attendance.

USAID State2State capacity building and citizens’ engagement specialist, Munachiso Odulana, who joined the review virtually listed the meeting objectives to include, reviewing progress on OGP implementation in the state within the outgoing year, inclusion of women for more active engagement and expansion of the steering and technical committees in line with the new administration set up.

Sokoto State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nasiru Mohammed Binji, assured of more recognition and visibility of OGP in the state through consultative meetings with citizens, accountability and transparency in governance.

Barrister Binji, now a Co-Chair of OGP in the state declared that “Sokoto state will provide needed funds and adopt the use of technology in the implementation of OGP State Action Plan, SAP.”

Non-State Actors Co-Chair, Dr Auwal Ahmed Musa, presented the status of OGP implementation in Sokoto state since 2022, to the meeting.

There were also presentations on importance of citizens’ engagement in achieving the OGP reforms; mainstreaming Gender and Social Inclusion, GESI, into Sokoto state OGP SAP; understanding the role and participation of CSOs in ensuring successful OGP SAP implementation.
