Sokoto govt partners UNICEF, others to expand social register for vulnerable households

Published by

The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, the European Union (EU), and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), has announced plans to scale up social protection coverage in the state by expanding the National Social Register to capture more vulnerable households.

The pledge was made on Friday at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on the review of the National Social Protection Policy and the National Social Register, held at Dankani Hotel, Sokoto.

Speaking on behalf of the State Operation and Coordinating Unit (SOCU), the State Coordinator commended participants for their active involvement in shaping strategies to support poor and vulnerable populations.

“We appreciate the time you have taken to share your perspectives and expertise, which will help in refining our approaches to better support vulnerable households,” the coordinator said.

He revealed that the expansion exercise, supported by UNICEF, EU, and ILO, will enroll an additional one million households across four pilot states—Sokoto, Benue, Abia, and Oyo.

According to him, the initiative will significantly strengthen government capacity to identify, target, and deliver social protection interventions to those most in need.

The SOCU Coordinator further praised development partners for their commitment, noting that their contributions have been instrumental in enhancing Sokoto’s ability to achieve its social protection objectives.

“We value this collaboration and look forward to sustained partnership in advancing social protection goals for the benefit of our citizens,” he added.
