Sokoto govt donates N1.1bn worth of food, cash aid to IDPs

Sokoto State Government has donated 10 trucks of food items worth 1.1 billion naira and other items, which include N50 million in cash assistance and 20,000 wrappers, to the internally displaced persons in the Goronyo local government area of the state.

This was disclosed by Gov. Ahmed Aliyu at the flag-off of the distribution of food items and cash assistance to IDPs in Goronyo LGA.

The governor also announced a donation of 20 million naira from the APC leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, to all the IDPs in the state.

According to him, the gesture is aimed at providing succour to the displaced persons so that they can live a comfortable life in their various camps.

‘” We are donating N50 million, 10 trucks of food items, and 20,000 pieces of wrappers to the internally displaced people in Goronyo.

“We are indeed touched by the activities of bandits in the eastern zone; as such, we are taking all the necessary measures to secure the entire area,” he assured.

He restated the commitment of his administration to ensuring the welfare of the displaced persons, pending the time the government succeeds in relocating them back to their ancestral homes.

The governor called for support from all quarters in halting the activities of the bandits and other crimes in the state.

“Let me warn those that would distribute these items to desist from tempering with them, as doing so would lead to serious consequences.

“These items belong to mostly widows and orphans; therefore, they must benefit fully from them,” he warned.

The governor also lamented the involvement of youths in banditry, serving as informants, which had contributed immensely to the surge in banditry in the state.

Gov. Aliyu also expressed worry over the way some youths are aiding banditry for monetary gains, which is usually very insignificant.

He called on the ulamas and traditional rulers to continue to educate their subjects on the need for people to seek a lively life through legitimate means.

According to him, the government is enhancing its social investment programme so that more people will continue to be empowered to earn their livelihoods legally.

“We are working round the clock to boost the agricultural sector so that all our irrigable lands can be properly put to use.

“We have made adequate provisions to support our farmers through improved seedlings, pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, as well as farm implements.

“This is to guarantee sufficient food production in our dear state and county as a whole, he averred.

Gov. Aliyu added that the idea was to encourage more people to engage in one form of agriculture or another so that the state could achieve much-needed food security.

The governor commended President Bola Tinubu for his support to the state in many aspects, such as security, agriculture and empowerment

He appealed for more support in the area of aerial surveillance and raids of bandits’ hideouts in the state and other parts of the country.

In his remarks, the APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, commended the governor for his numerous achievements in just one year and urged him to keep it up.

He also appreciated the support of the people of the state in heeding calls and advice from the government and ulama not to partake in the proposed national protests.

“The protest has always been more destructive than constructive; we have seen this in many places where protests have taken place.”

“I urge you all to go back to farm since this rainy season so that you can help the state produce more food,” He appealed

Senator Wamakko also reminded people in the state to continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s policies and programmes in the interest of the nation.

The representative of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Aliyu Attahiru, commended the state government for the numerous people-oriented projects executed within just one year.

He called on the people of the state to continue to rally around the present administration so that more projects could be executed

He prayed for the success of the present administration in the state.

Highlights of the event included the official flagging off of the distribution of food items to some of the internally displaced persons by some dignitaries at the event.
