Sokoto dep gov resigns, as three jostle for post

THE Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has tendered his resignation letter from the post to the state house of assembly.

In a letter read on the floor of the house on Wednesday by the clerk of the assembly, Umar Umar Dodo, Ahmed expressed his appreciation to the people of the state for the opportunity to serve in the capacity of a Deputy Governor for over three years now.
The former Deputy Governor who is also the Gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), in the forthcoming 2019  general elections did not, however, state his reason for the actions.
However, a top government official who speaks on the condition of anonymous however confirmed to TribuneOnline that the former Deputy Governor took the decision to avoid being embarrassed out of the government.
“He only behaves like a courageous man when he realised that there is a danger of impeachment against him.

“If he remains in the office beyond some period of time more, he may not find it funny and it may affect his next political career,” the source added.
Meanwhile, some People’s Democratic Party (PDP) bigwigs have started lobbying the Governor for the deputy governor’s replacement in Sokoto.
Baring last minutes agreement with the PDP stakeholders in Sokoto state, the party might have agreed to present three names to governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for onward transmission to the state house of Assembly as consideration for the replacement of the deputy governor, shortly after the resignation of Ahmed Aliyu yesterday.
The much-talked list of the likely nominees is Hon Umaru Moh’d Bature, state commissioner of water resources, Hon Sagir Attahiru Bafarawa who contested for the seat of House of Representatives in 2015 and Hon Aliyu Mohammed FC, member of the Federal Allocations Commission.
According to sources within the seat of power, the elders agreed to support governor Tambuwal bids for the second term in office but advised him not to leave the office of the deputy governor to an amateur that may jeopardise his great chances of bringing development within the shortage period of his last lap tenure in office.
“Tambuwal must stand and show he is in control of his affairs by appointing a man who can make his govt vibrant and politically balanced; he needs a supporting pillar, a very reliable ally in garnering support and confidence of all other leaders within the old PDP.
 “The best thing for him now is to the addressed issue of complaints varied from political lapses and indifference among some old supporters of the party by bringing someone who is trustworthy to all the leadership of the party in the state to be in that office.
“Remember, both Bafarawa and Wali are two formidable workforces in the PDP, they can’t be sidelines on issues that are important as this; this is time for political cohesion and balanced within the party in the state.
“Tambuwal needs to take them along; so as to be on safer side for 2019. It must be realistic to work together in unity for the success of the 1 party in Sokoto state,” said one of the party elder in the state.
