Society trains 250 health workers to prevent newborn deaths in Kebbi

THE Nigerian Society of Neo-natal Medicine (NISOM) has trained over 250 health and community extension workers in efforts to prevent the death of newborn babies in Kebbi State.

The National President of the society, Prof. Chinyere Ezeaka, made this known on Monday at the end of the society’s 11th Annual Summit held in Birnin Kebbi.

“More than 250 community health extension workers from Argungu, Birnin Kebbi and Jega Local Government Areas received training from health experts at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare.

“This can be achieved in the areas of neonatal resuscitation, respiratory support, breastfeeding, hand-washing and immunisation, among others,” she said.

The NISOM national president thanked the wife of the governor, Dr Zainab Bagudu, for hosting the three-day conference as well as UNICEF, Federal Ministry of Health and other sister organisations for making the summit a success.

Dr Bagudu expressed delight at the gesture of the society towards reducing maternal and newborn deaths.

“I am highly delighted that you are here; you have seen that Kebbi is the most peaceful state in Nigeria and I hope your coming will impact on the lives of people of the state, especially women and children,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference is: “Achieving Optimal Quality Care for Newborn Health in Nigeria.”
