SMEDAN, NBS to authenticate 37 million MSMEs figure

THE Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) in conjunction with National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday commenced the process of updating the statistics about the number of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the country.

At the last national survey conducted in January 2014, 37,067,416 enterprises were operating in the economy employing 59,741,211 persons.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Survey, SMEDAN Director General, Dr Dikko Umar Radda said the most recently conducted exercise was in 2013.

The findings which were released in 2014 revealed amongst other things that as against the December 2010 baseline survey with the number of enterprises in Nigeria being 17,284,678 and employing 32,414,884 persons, MSMEs numbers had risen to 37,067,416 enterprises and employing 59,741,211 persons as at January 2014.

“The latter survey also showed that MSMEs contributed 48.47 per cent or N38.78 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP and 7.07 per cent to exports earnings.

These have been using economic indices on MSMEs, which has been very useful to local and foreign investors.”

Radda who was represented at the event by Mr. a senior director, Mr Wale Fasanya explained that in the 2017 survey that will soon commence nationwide, two micro enterprises sub-class would be categorized instead of the former undifferentiated micro-enterprises class.

“This will help distinguish an establishment-leaning microenterprise sub-class (or salaried paid employment) from the other microenterprise sub-class of unpaid or part-time household members”

The aim of Tuesday’s workshop, therefore, was to get general reactions of stakeholders about the outcome of the 2013 survey report; scrutinise/validate the proposed 2017 survey design and instruments as the basis for field work; obtain any other information tangential to the exercise and; get additional statistics from stakeholders that will help achieve better enterprise numbers.”

Speaking earlier, Director, Real Sector and Household Statistics at NBS, Dr Isiaka Olanrewaju who represented the Statistician General of the Federation, Mr Yemi Kale had described MSMEs as important economic catalysts in the development and industrialisation of Nigeria.Sanya Adejokun- Abuja
