SMEDAN disburses grants to 16 cooperative societies in Sokoto

In its bid to eradicate poverty at the grassroots levels, the Small and Medium Enterprises Agency of Nigeria has disbursed grants to nothing less than sixteen co-operative societies in Sokoto State.

Speaking while handing over the cheque to the beneficiaries on Friday, the Director-General of SMEDAN, Umar Dikko Radda, said each of the co-operative societies will get N312,500.00 cash grants.

The Director-General who was represented by the Sokoto State manager, Mr Muazu Mohammed Barau, said those selected were as evidence of the completion of the WISE-P programme.

He said the grant is part of the capacity building provided by the agency, with which he urged them to make judicious use of the money to grow their business for economic sustainability.

The State manager of the agency, Muazu Mohammed Barau, said the programme is a result of three weeks of intensive training for the beneficiaries.

He said the beneficiaries were selected in different fields including farming. He urges them to make judicious use of the money for their business.

One of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of others, Hajia Fatima Bello Gunmi, commend SMEDAN for the opportunity given to her members.

Gunmi, who is the state coordinator of small-medium farmers of Nigeria, Sokoto State chapter, described the empowerment granted to women as the right decision at the right time.

She said those who benefited from the scheme are real farmers and not political farmers

She assured that the beneficiaries of the grant will make use of it judiciously and shift from domestic farmers to commercial farmers.

She however called for more support for the women farmers in the state to encourage others.
