Six symptoms of liver disease

Liver disease can manifest with a variety of symptoms, depending on the specific condition and its severity.

Here are six common symptoms associated with liver disease:

Jaundice

One of the most noticeable symptoms of liver disease, jaundice causes yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. This occurs due to the buildup of bilirubin, a yellow pigment, in the bloodstream when the liver is unable to process it effectively.

Fatigue

Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of liver disease. As the liver becomes damaged, it may struggle to perform its functions efficiently, leading to feelings of tiredness and weakness.

Abdominal pain and swelling

Liver disease can cause discomfort and tenderness in the upper right side of the abdomen, where the liver is located. Swelling or fluid buildup in the abdomen, known as ascites, can also occur.

Loss of appetite and weight loss

People with liver disease may experience a decreased appetite and unintended weight loss. This can be due to factors such as nausea, changes in metabolism, and a reduced ability to digest and absorb nutrients from food.

Nausea and vomiting

Liver disease can cause digestive problems, including nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may be especially pronounced after eating fatty or rich foods.

Changes in urine and stool

Liver disease can affect the color and consistency of urine and stool. Urine may appear darker than usual, while stools may become pale, clay-colored, or tar-like. This is often due to disruptions in the liver’s production and excretion of bile.

It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary in severity and may overlap with those of other medical conditions. If you experience any persistent or concerning symptoms, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis.
