Commercial and social activities in Owerri the capital of Imo State and its environs have remained normal following the relaxation of a one-week sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
IPOB had issued a sit-at-home order on the heels of the Anambra governorship election slated for November 6 in protest against the continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The order was however cancelled according to a statement by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful on Thursday, following public outcry and appeal by critical stakeholders in the South-East geopolitical zone.
The popular Eke Ukwu Owerri, Relief Market and Egbeada Markets were opened with buying and selling in full swing as vehicular and pedestrian movements remained normal.
Also, motor parks, banks and ATM points bubbled with activities although, most schools were locked down.
A visit to the State secretariat confirmed the presence of some civil servants in their duty posts
Speaking, Mr Peter Ojo, a primary school teacher, said that the fear of the unknown resulting from the order must have been a reason for the absence of pupils in schools.
He said: ” If the news of the cancellation of the order had been disseminated before Thursday, children would have been in school today”
Also, Mr Harrison Udoka, a retired civil servant, hailed the decision to relax the order adding that it would contribute to a free and fair election in Anambra.
He however called on the Federal Government to consider negotiating with the IPOB, noting that the move would yield better results.
