Singapore airport set to discard use of passports

Singapore Airport is set to introduce a new automated clearance system in 2024.

The technology will allow passengers to travel without passports relying only on biometric data.

“Singapore will be one of the first few countries in the world to introduce automated, passport-free immigration clearance,” Communications Minister Josephine Teo announced during a parliament session on Monday, during which several changes to the country’s Immigration Act were passed.

Singapore’s Changi Airport has long been referred to as one of the best airports in the world as cutting-edge technology like biometric technology, along with facial recognition software, is already in use to some extent at the airport.

The upcoming introduction of the automated clearance will “reduce the need for passengers to repeatedly present their travel documents at touch points and allow for more seamless and convenient processing,” the communication minister said.

Teo stressed that passport will still be required for many countries outside of Singapore that do not offer passport-free clearance.

EDITORIAL: The NURTW shooting in Abuja

VIOLENCE and brigandage have always been the trademarks of transport unions, especially the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), across many cities  and  towns in Nigeria where they operate. They act as outlaws who are wont to breach the law at every turn. And because of their unholy alliance with politicians, they operate with a certain leverage that tends to protect them from the deterrent actions of the security agencies, and even the law..
