Simple tips on how to relate with your in-laws as a female

Published by

When a woman gets married, she not only gains a husband but also gains a new family, as marriage is not just a union between two individuals – it’s a union between two families.

Exploring the web of the relationship with in-laws as a female can feel overwhelming at times, but with wisdom, patience, and intentionality, it can become one of the most rewarding aspects of married life.

In this article, there are practical tips for women on how to relate with their in-laws.

1. Be Respectful

In relating with your in-laws as a female, respect and honour are non-negotiable.

Your husband’s parents and family are a major part of his life, and regardless of their personality, you need to approach them with great honour with or without your partner.

Your show of respect towards them earns you their trust, their hearts and sets the tone for a peaceful relationship.

2. Don’t Compete-Complement

Oftentimes, some women are in the habit of competing with their in-laws, especially the mother-in-law. Madam, you’re meant to complement your partner and not compete with his parents or siblings.

The earlier you know that you’re not in competition with your mother-in-law or his siblings, the better for you because you have your unique place in his life as his wife. Instead of trying to outshine or outdo anyone, seek ways to compliment and appreciate the roles others play in his life.

3. Take Initiative

As a female, you must take the initiative in building a healthy relationship with your in-laws.

Don’t wait for your husband to tell you or for your in-laws to reach out before you do so.

Be intentional about building a bond with them.

Ensure that you get them gifts from time to time while also making efforts to be at some family gatherings. Showing up consistently shows that you care, and it helps build a connection with them over time. Yes, I understand you’re a woman of class, but…check below!

4. Create Boundaries With Love

As much as you want to build connections with your in-laws, you should also be deliberate about creating healthy boundaries.

Boundaries aren’t barriers – they are bridges to healthy relationships. Boundaries help you know when an in-law is overstepping and how best to deal with such situations.

5. Avoid Comparisons

As a female, in all you do with your in-laws, avoid comparisons. Your family can never be like that of your spouse because every family is different and has its dynamics.

Comparison will only lead to frustration and a widening of the gap between you and your in-laws. Choose to celebrate the differences and enjoy the uniqueness of each family.

6. Protect The Peace In Your Home

A wise woman builds her home, while a foolish one destroys it with her hands. As a woman, the peace of your home should always remain a priority.

Never allow in-law drama to take root in your marriage, and do not drag your husband into unnecessary battles or expect him to pick sides. Instead, aim to be a woman of peace who works in promoting peace and togetherness between both families.

7. Always Communicate With Your Husband

Constant communication with your husband is key to having a thriving relationship with your in-laws.

Let your husband know how things are going with his family – especially if you’re feeling hurt or overwhelmed. Know that in doing this – your tone and timing is very important. Don’t make it about blame; make it about building a better understanding.

In all, relating with your in-laws as a female is a journey, not a one-time achievement. It takes patience, emotional intelligence, and prayer (if you’re faith-based).

Remember, you didn’t just marry a man – you became a part of a bigger family story. And with wisdom, you can write your part of that story beautifully.
