Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, has pleaded with workers in the nation’s health sector to stay committed to contributing to the sector rather than subscribing to the current trend of leaving for abroad, popularly known as japa.
Ogundoyin appealed the convocation and 74th foundation ceremony of the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Eleyele, Ibadan.
The convocation saw 795 graduates of basic nursing, community nursing, midwifery, and community midwifery from 2017 receive certificates from the institution.
Rather than embracing Japan, Ogundoyin urged the newly certified nurses and midwives to have the utmost on their minds, serving humanity and helping to bridge the gap in health personnel in the country.
Noting that existing health workers were still not enough to meet the healthcare needs of Nigerians, he said the tendency for people to acquire medical certificates simply as a tool to leave the country does not augur well for the country.
Though he noted that health workers are not appreciated enough, Ogundoyin said health personnel must not compromise on delivering quality as the lives of many are in their hands.
He charged the newly certified nurses and midwives not to put personal gains above ethical values.
In the state, Ogundoyin assured that the state will continue to root for increased funding and recruitment for the health sector.
Rendering a similar appeal as the Oyo Speaker, the Director, Nursiseekng Services, Ministry of Health, Oyo State, Dr Oyebode Omokehinde also begged health workers to stay back to help improve the nation’s health sector rather than doing what they regard as ‘greener pastures.’
Permanent Secretary, Oyo Ministry of Health, Dr Olubunmi Ayinde, who represented Governor Seyi Makinde, identified efforts of the state government to address the shortage of manpower in the health sector.
He said one of the efforts is the evolution of a full scholarship scheme for students of community nursing and community midwifery across the 33 local government areas and 35 local council development areas of the state.
He asserted that the government was committed to raising the standard of the college to the point that it granted it semi-autonomous status and approved a six-acre piece of land for the construction of a hostel to accommodate more students.
He charged the graduates with empathy, providing kindness, empathy, and comfort for the sick and needy.
In her remarks, the provost of the college, Dr Gbonjubola Owolabi, tasked the new health workers with building a career that hinges on diligence and love for humanity.
Gratified by the state government’s support resulting in accreditation of all its programmes, she assured that the school will continue to churn out quality middle-level manpower for the nation’s health sector.
In her remarks, the Registrar, Nursing Council of Nigeria, represented by Mrs Bola Abdulwahab, charged the graduates to advocate for better healthcare policies and make a positive difference wherever they serve.
She also tasked them with selflessness and commitment as values that would make them successful in their professional careers.
Among those who received awards as the best-graduating students were Oyelakin Adekunle, Busari Atinuke (basic nursing), Adekunle Victor, Olarinde Boluwatife (community nursing), Busari Badira, Oyetayo Oluwaseun, and Yusuf Opeyemi (post-basic midwifery).
