Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, Professor Labode Popoola, on Sunday, described as untrue, insinuation that two students of institution shot by policemen on Saturday had died in a hospital where they were receiving treatment.

Reacting to the death rumour through a telephone chat with the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, the vice chancellor maintained that there was no iota of truth in the information going round that the shot students, Adesola Kazeem and Ajao Ibrahim, had passed on in the hospital.

According to Popoola, “I would like to inform parents, guardians and all stakeholders that it was true some policemen, on Saturday morning, shot and wounded two of our students for yet unclear reasons. Immediately we were informed, we acted swiftly, taking the victims to safety. They are now receiving the best available care in one of the best hospitals in the state.”

Popoola, who claimed that he was at the bedside of the wounded students as early as 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, disclosed that they were responding well to treatment.

He, however, called on students and other members of the university community to maintain peace and go about their normal businesses, assuring that the institution management and security agencies were on top of the situation.

The UNIOSUN boss said further that “we wish to state clearly also that relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident and justice will be done immediately.”

It will be recalled that the two students were shot by some policemen from the headquarters of Zone 11 of the Nigeria Police after being accused of being involved in internet fraud.
