Shittu inaugurates NAS committee to boost NIPOST service delivery

The Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu on Thursday inaugurated the National Addressing System (NAS) Committee to enhance the service delivery of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

Inaugurating the Committee in Abuja, Shittu highlighted the importance of an effective addressing system, which he said would play an important role in National development beyond mail delivery.

His words: “The establishment of a well-articulated action also Addressing System, which is long overdue is predicated on the importance and role it plays in National development beyond the primary aim of mail delivery.

“National addressing infrastructure is strategic for National planning and development. Therefore, a standardised addressing infrastructure and database are indispensable in locating residents of this country.

A homogeneous and unambiguous addressing resource is an essential tool for effective and efficient service Delivery.

“Stakeholders, especially states and local government areas, are invited to note that they are still responsible for the implementation of their constitutional roles but are to be guided on globally accepted ways of performing those roles to facilitate the development of an addressing infrastructure that supports Geographical Positioning System (GPS) equipment and applications.

“Stakeholders and all Nigerian are therefore invited to support the National Addressing System Committee Members in the discharge of their duties and adopt standards and guidelines for the implementation of the National Addressing System.

The Digital Addressing system will enable the postman to locate the customer anywhere in the country, and also assist security operatives in having a well-detailed address of Nigerians so that perpetrators of crimes will be easily apprehended.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Postmaster General of NIPOST, Barrister Adebisi Adegbuyi said the Digital Addressing System will enable every home in Nigeria to have a digital address.

He said Nigeria will use this massive national infrastructure to ensure that it brings to the barest minimum the commission of a crime, adding that once we have a digital addressing system and digitalized address verification system, Nigeria will succeed in ensuring that the people who commit a crime will have a rethink before they do that.
