Shiites protest: Buhari directs IGP to protect Nigerians

Against the backdrop of continued protests by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to ensure the safety of Nigerians.

IGP Adamu revealed this while speaking with State House correspondents when he met the President at the Aso Villa in Abuja to brief him on the Monday protest.

Recall that members of the group also known as Shiites clashed with Policemen during their protest at the Federal Secretariat to press home the demand for their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky who has been in detention for three years.

An unconfirmed number of deaths were recorded during the clash which started around 1:30 pm in Abuja. The number of those who sustained in the clash has not been ascertained.

A National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) station at the secretariat and a special ambulance, Rescue Tender and Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) were burnt in the process.

Meanwhile, several courts have granted El-Zakzaky bail on different occasions but the Nigerian government had refused to release him.

Also recently, the IMN raised alarm over the deteriorating health conditions of El-Zakzaky and his wife, demanding medical attention for the duo abroad.
