Shettima unveils plans to build skilled national workforce

Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered a compelling call to action to the newly appointed members of the reconstituted National Council on Skills (NCS), urging them to prioritise the development of a skilled workforce in Nigeria.

Addressing the Council’s inauguration ceremony at the Presidential Villa, the Vice President outlined the government’s strategic initiatives aimed at fostering a skilled workforce. These initiatives include streamlining skills development policies, expediting the implementation of the National Skills Qualification Framework, establishing funding mechanisms, and advocating for professional certification.

Shettima emphasized the pivotal role of a skilled workforce in charting the nation’s path to a prosperous future, acknowledging the challenges ahead for the NCS. He underscored the Council’s significance as a driving force for skills development since its inception in 2019.

Furthermore, Vice President Shettima announced the addition of two new members to the Council, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing challenges head-on. He stressed the administration’s dedication to supporting stakeholders across the skills ecosystem.

In his commitment to overcoming obstacles hindering the sector’s growth, the Vice President pledged to tackle issues of standardization and regulation while recognizing the vital contribution of the informal sector to the nation’s GDP.

He emphasized the goal of cultivating a skilled workforce capable of contributing to both national and international endeavors.

Highlighting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a crucial component of the government’s action plan, Shettima urged council members to engage in collaborative discussions to develop a comprehensive action plan. He emphasized the importance of robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track progress.
