SGBV: Bogoro LGA partners office of First Lady to curb menace among rural dwellers

Worried by the increase in cases of sexual and gender-based violence in the Area, Bogoro LGC of Bauchi State has expressed its readiness to partner with the office of the First Lady of the State to curb the trend, particularly in the rural areas.

The expression was made by the Director of Administration and General Service of the Council, Mr Nehemiah Marcus, during a sensitization lecture organized by the office of the First Lady held in Bogoro LGA.

Nehemiah Marcus lamented that the high rate of sexual and gender-based violence being reported in the rural areas is worrisome and alarming, a trend he said must be checked.

He said that, “I am seriously disturbed about the increasing rate of sexual and gender violence in our area. Young girls that are supposed to be our future mothers are being molested on daily basis.”

“I want to appeal to parents to wake up to their responsibility of protecting our girls from being molested sexually,” he said.

The Village Head of Bogoro, Mr Nuhu Tafida and the Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria Pastor Amos Silas in their separate remarks condemned all forms of sexual molestation and appealed to the law enforcement agencies to deal with all those found guilty of sexual and gender related offenses.

They promised that traditional and religious leaders will continue to work with the police and the office of the first lady to stop it.

Earlier, Mrs Talatu Musa Gar said that the sensitization lecture was the initiative of the First Lady, Dr Aisha Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed wife of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State .

She said that, “I am grateful to see traditional and religious leaders, women and Youth leaders, security agents in this lecture. The purpose of the sensitization lecture is to remind ourselves of our duty as stakeholders to get involved in the fight against sexual and gender based violence which have become a daily occurrence in our community.”

According to her,”The office of the First Lady has continued to receive many cases about sexual violence taking place either at home, schools, market and other public places, hence the need for this sensitization become necessary’.

“May I appeal to all of us to use our positions to always speak against sexual violence and to assist victims of sexual violence by forwarding their cases to the police. Our office is ready to assist all those who have experience all manner of sexual violence,” She stressd.

Mrs.Talatu Musa Gar then requested the security agencies and health workers to treat cases of sexual and gender based violence with all seriousness.

She assured that,”Our office offers treatment to all victims of sexual violence and we further request you to forward any issue to us.”

Those who spoke during the lecture included the NSCDC, Lawyers, Immigration, Road Safety, amongst others as contained in a statement by Gomna James information officer, Bogoro LGA.
