Seven myths about skincare that need to be debunked

Skincare can be demanding and confusing, especially when you’re overwhelmed with conflicting advice. Everyone seems to have an opinion. While some are accurate, others are misleading. So, what are some of the false narratives you’ve encountered? Let’s take a look at seven common skincare myths that need to be debunked.

1. Overwash your face

The idea behind this may seem reasonable, but it does more harm than good. While the goal is to have clear, healthy skin, overwashing can leave your skin dry and irritated, stripping it of its natural oils. What should you do instead? Stick to washing your face twice daily—once in the morning and once at night.

2. Use sunscreen only when it’s sunny

Sunscreens aren’t only meant to be applied when the sun is out or when you’ll be outside for most of the day. It should be used every day, otherwise, there would be consequences for your skin.

3. Only water can cure dry skin

This skincare myth is common because of the phrase “water is life.” While staying hydrated and washing your face are essential, water alone won’t solve dry skin issues. If you suffer from dry skin, use moisturisers and body butters that nourish and lock in hydration.

4. Pop pimples

Popping pimples might feel satisfying in the moment, but it can damage your skin. You risk causing pain, scarring, and creating an entry point for bacteria, which can worsen breakouts. Instead, be patient and consider seeking professional skincare advice.

5. The more expensive, the better

Some believe that a product’s price reflects its effectiveness. However, skincare is not one-size-fits-all. Different skin types have different needs, and there are affordable products that work just as well—sometimes even better—than their pricier counterparts. Always prioritise your skin’s specific needs over the price tag.

6. Natural ingredients are always the safest

The label “natural” can be misleading. Just because a product is made from natural ingredients doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe for your skin. Some natural substances can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Always patch-test and confirm a product’s suitability before applying it fully.

7. No need for moisturiser

Regardless of your skin type whether dry or oily, moisturising is essential. There are different types of moisturisers and body butters to suit varying skin types. Don’t fall for the myth that oily skin doesn’t need moisture. Choose the right product for your skin to maintain a healthy balance.

In conclusion, whether true or false, information can significantly impact your skincare journey. Make sure you get your facts right and consult a professional when necessary. Your skin deserves more than guesswork, don’t leave it to chance.
