Seven-day ultimatum to vacate under bridges still stands, Sanwo-Olu tells Lagos traders

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, insisted that no going back on the seven-day ultimatum issued by the state government to traders under bridges across the state to vacate those places.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated the state government’s decision to the traders under bridges during an on-the-spot assessment of the Apongbon Section of Eko Bridge in Lagos Island, which was gutted by fire last week Wednesday.

The governor, while reaffirming the government’s position as he addressed the traders at Apongbon and Obalende areas, noted sadly the extensive destruction of the bridge at Apongbon by the said fire, saying that the state government was collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Works and the contractor that handled the bridge to clear the refuse and conduct a comprehensive assessment of the affected part.

The governor, therefore, urged citizens to take ownership of government assets to forestall further reoccurrence of such incidents which he said had been affecting the economy adversely as the state had in recent years witnessed about nine of such.

Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the state government was planning to hold a meeting with the market women in the axis, in its bid to relocate them to another location.

The governor, however, enjoined motorists to use Ebute Ero to link Inner Marina and Third Mainland Bridge to continue their journeys, affirming that the State Traffic Management Authority, (LASTMA) was already on the ground along the alternate routes to minimize inconveniences and bring normalcy to the area.

Earlier on, the traders, who displayed different placards to express their feelings at the Apongbon Section of Eko Bridge that was gutted by fire, appealed to the state government to reconsider its decision to relocate the market.

Some of the traders, while making the appeal to the governor, said they were responsible citizens that were adding value to Nigeria’s economy through the market, and, therefore, urged the state government to help them continue in their businesses.

It would be recalled that following the inferno which engulfed the Apongbon axis of the Eko Bridge in the early hours of last Wednesday, the Lagos State government through the Commissioner, Ministry of Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, had ordered that the bridge be shut while traffic was diverted for the safety of motorists.
