Service delivery: FG begins moves to restructure NIPOST

THE Federal Government have commenced the process of restructuring and modernisation of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), to improve its service delivery across the country.

This moves preceded the signing of the contract agreement between Bureau of Public Enterprise and the Transaction Adviser (KPMG) for the Postal Service Reform, Restructuring and Modernisation of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

In his address, the Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu said: “This signing ceremony concludes the process of engagement of the Transaction Adviser that will work with the Steering Committee and other stakeholders and it kick-starts the activities and the process of reforming NIPOST.”

He further noted that: “The Postal Sector Reforms, Restructuring and Modernisation of NIPOST, which is a collaborative project of the Federal Ministry of Communication, the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the NIPOST, that commenced with the inauguration of a Steering Committee and Project Delivery Team (PDT).”

He said the transaction is expected to “prepare NIPOST for corporatisation by providing advice and support for the short-term restructuring of the enterprise;

“Provide the requisite advice and support required for the FGN to implement the restructuring and modernisation of the NIPOST in a manner that is consistent with relevant national policies; laws and international best practices;

“Provide advice in core operational areas, so that the NIPOST can be effectively run in the post-restructuring and modernization era; thus making it commercially viable and attractive to customers; While still discharging the social services expected of a government agency.”

In his address, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BOE), Mr Alex Okoh said the Bureau is charged with the mandate of reforming the nation’s postal sector, which will see to the ultimate modernisation and restructuring of NIPOST.

“This exercise commenced with the setting up and inauguration of a Steering Committee and Project Delivery Team (PDT) as approved by the National Council on Privatisation (NCP).

“Today’s contract signing will kick-start the implementation phase of the project. It is expected that the Transaction Adviser will work in close concert with Stakeholders through the course of the assignment.

“It is pertinent to note that the success of the Postal Sector reform is to a large extent hinged on the dexterity and commitment the Transaction Adviser brings to this assignment,” Mr Okoh noted.
