The Seplat Energy JV Company, in collaboration with the NNPC, flagged off the 2024 edition of its free “Eye Can See Initiative” on Thursday, offering treatment to thousands of citizens in the state.
Speaking at the event held at Full Moon Hotel, Owerri, the Managing Director of Eastern Asset at Seplat Energy, Ibi-Ada, represented by Emmanuel Otokhine, Base Manager of Eastern Asset, Seplat Energy, emphasized the company’s dedication to holistic and community development.
He noted that since its inception, Seplat has reached over 105,000 Nigerians.
According to him, the oil company has performed 4,560 life-changing eye surgeries and distributed more than 51,000 reading glasses. These efforts aim to reduce preventable blindness, promote early detection of eye diseases, and enhance the quality of life for beneficiaries.
The MD reiterated Seplat’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and transforming lives in Imo State.
He said Seplat Energy, as the foremost indigenous energy company, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has once again demonstrated its leadership in corporate social investment through the successful deployment of the 2024 edition of its flagship healthcare initiative, “Eye Can See,” in Imo State.
He added that, over five days, the programme has provided critical eye care services—free screenings, surgeries, and distribution of eyeglasses—to thousands of underserved residents, reaffirming the JV’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare access in its host communities.
He described the flag-off as a significant milestone in Seplat’s long-standing legacy of impactful healthcare outreach, which began in 2012.
He said: “We are not just operators in the regions where we work; we are partners in progress. Initiatives like ‘Eye Can See’ ensure that our communities experience the tangible benefits of our presence, and that our commitment goes beyond business operations.”
Echoing this sentiment, Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), represented by Dr. Obinna Otuu, Asset Manager at NUIMS, highlighted the broader impact of the programme.
He said: “Success is not only about managing resources but about uplifting lives. The ‘Eye Can See’ initiative is a testament to our deep-seated commitment to the well-being of the communities we serve.”
He also noted that through this programme, NNPCL and Seplat Energy are not only addressing urgent medical needs but also educating communities on managing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which can lead to vision loss.
Speaking at the event, the Imo State Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hon. Emeka Mgbudem, praised the initiative, stating, “Seplat and NNPCL have shown that their partnership goes beyond energy production.”

He added: “It’s about human development—health, education, and capacity building. When I see the array of people treated for glaucoma and cataracts today, it demonstrates that their vision is for a better future. Seplat has remained our best partner, and we are proud of the work they are doing.”
Also, in his speech, the traditional ruler of Obioma Dike Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Council Area, HRH Eze Sylvester Okwuordu, described Seplat as the best among oil companies operating in the region.
He said: “Despite being relatively young in the oil industry, Seplat’s name rings louder than its rival companies that have been operating in the state for years.”
The monarch added that Seplat is synonymous with community programmes, similar to the efforts of Agip Oil Company in Rivers State.
Reacting, Adanne Ekeneme, whose relative received a free eye screening and treatment, expressed deep gratitude.
She described the programme as life-changing, adding that what would have cost them a fortune was being provided for free.
She prayed for God to continue to bless Seplat and NNPC for their kindness.
A beneficiary of the free eye treatment, Chief Hyginus Onyeuka, who underwent cataract surgery, shared his transformative experience.
He said: “I was blind for many years, but today I can see clearly. I can’t thank Seplat enough for restoring my sight. This programme is nothing short of a miracle for people like me.”
The Eye Can See programme is a shining example of Seplat Energy JV’s commitment to creating sustainable, long-lasting impacts in its host communities.
