Senator Plang condemns attacks on Plateau community

Senator Diket Plang, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity and Vice Chairman of the Federal Character Committee, has expressed dismay over the recent attacks in parts of the Mangu and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State.

He called for synergy between the people of the troubled communities in the state and the security agencies to curb the incessant attacks on the locals.

Senator Plang, in a statement, also condemned the attack on the Plateau State University off-campus hostel by the assailants, resulting in the loss of one student’s life.

He emphasized that the unfortunate developments in the two local government areas and other parts of the state necessitate cooperation and understanding between the locals and security agencies. He urged them to foster confidence in one another.

According to him, the security agencies require information to effectively operate, while the people need protection and assurance that they will not betray the trust and confidence placed in them by the community.

“The stakeholders in all affected communities and the security agencies must come together. None of them can work in isolation; the security agencies need the locals for prompt information to act upon, and the locals need security agencies for protection.”

He, however, extended condolences to the management, staff, and students of the Plateau State University over the killing of one of the university’s students by attackers who invaded the off-campus hostel last Friday.

“My heart goes out to the family of the deceased and the entire university community over this irreparable loss. The attacks in parts of Mangu and Bokkos have been a source of concern to me, but I am more worried when students suddenly become the target of the marauders.”
