Senator Plang commends Tinubu for renaming Abuja varsity after General Gowon

Published by

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, and also the Vice-chairman of the Federal Character Committee, Senator Diket Plang, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for renaming the University of Abuja as the Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja. He also used this medium to congratulate General Yakubu Gowon for this honour.

In a statement, Senator Plang described the renaming as a befitting honour to a leader who has continued to contribute immensely to the development of Nigeria in all spheres of life and a strong believer in one Nigeria.

“The former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, is a unifier and nationalist who believes strongly in one Nigeria. The selfless and exemplary leadership he displayed as former Head of State is still formidable and a reference point to this day. He is a great nationalist and a man with great humility.

“The noble role he played during the turbulent moment of Nigeria (1967-1970) is among the basis of Nigeria’s existence today and what we are learning as a country. Therefore, the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University of Abuja is a profound honour.

“The people of Plateau Central Senatorial Zone and the entire Plateau State received the renaming of the citadel of learning after our father, the former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, with joy and gladness; it is no doubt a deserved recognition for an enduring legacy.”

The senator representing Plateau Central equally assured that the National Assembly would hasten the passage of necessary legislation to seal the renaming of the university, which has been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“This is a befitting honour and 90th birthday gift not only to our father but to the entire people of Plateau Central & Plateau State, where General Yakubu Gowon hails from. Our appreciation therefore goes to Mr. President and the entire government. This is reassuring that patience, hard work, selflessness, and integrity pay.”
