Senator Sani Musa Bawa has come under fire for mocking Senator Kawu Sumaila’s English pronunciation in the Senate.
A political analyst, Shu’ayb Mustapha Kano, has defended Sumaila, saying he is far better than Bawa in English mastery.
Kano described Bawa’s actions as unbecoming, noting that Sumaila’s grammatical knowledge and achievements as a lawmaker speak louder than his phonology skills.
According to Kano, Sumaila has consistently presented the problems of his constituents on the Senate floor and has been instrumental in addressing key issues, including foiling former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term agenda in 2007.
“No one will agree with Senator Sani Musa Bawa that Senator Kawu Sumaila isn’t conversant with English language, because, has Senator Kawu not have the required mastery of English language, he wouldn’t have achieved his lengthy list of achievements as a politician.
“This is including being one of the outspoken Federal Lawmakers who put the pressure on former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s unbridled third term agenda/ambition in the dying days of his last tenure of office in 2007 which saved our nascent democracy from hitting the buffers at infancy.”
Kano added that the people of Kano South Senatorial District are satisfied with Sumaila’s representation and may re-elect him in 2027.
He emphasised that Sumaila’s mastery of English is evident in his ability to build flawless grammatical structures, despite potential limitations in phonology.
